- Coach Alex Best made no comments. Here's is the lineup that Best submitted prior to the game. Seeing the decrease in numbers, it's no wonder he's moved Garcia to the bench to start the new James Harden.

Post-Game Interviews

Alex Best (King's Head Coach): "These are the games that coaches dream of. The starting 5 dominated on offense, and the bench 5 dominated on defense. Everyone knew exactly what they had to do to win, and everyone did it well. I don't have a single complaint against any of my players."

Tyreke Evans (Player Of The Game): "There's a few issues I had. Derrick Rose attempted a windmill dunk when they were down 20. Who does that? I'm glad we blocked that shot. He couldn't do anything. Then he throws up a full-court shot at the last second? Down 20? Who does that? I'm glad we dominated this game."

DeMarcus Cousins (Role Player): "I'm just glad I could contribute. When I joined the Kings I was afraid Evans would be doing everything and coach wouldn't let the rest of us play. That's not the case though and it makes this game even more fun to play."

Jon Ratski's Review

The Chicago Bulls looked like a disorganized high school team this game. Derrick Rose was trying to lift his team up, and couldn't do so. The Bulls even flashed a few pretty dunks (or at least attempted to, Derrick Rose's windmill dunk that was blocked by Dalembert from behind.) The King's just showed the rest of the NBA that those teams with one star can be beat. Teams with 5 are the ones that are hard to stop. So here's the good and bad!
  • Blocks upon Blocks! Kings got 8 compared to Bulls 2. 5 of those 8 came from the King's bench!
  • The Bulls couldn't hold on to the ball. Except for Noah, every player on the starting 5 turned the ball over two times each.
  • Bulls didn't have a bench, only scoring 5 compared the King's bench putting up 24.
  • The King's shot 70% from beyond the arc! Coach Best is doing a great job changing the King's one weakness.
  • Kings continue to out-assist every team they've played so far, getting 19 compared to the Bulls 12.
  • Tyreke Evans was fantastic, snagging 18 points with 7-12 and improving beyond the arc, shooting 3-4! He even got 2 steals and a block. His improvement has been quick.
  • DeMarcus Cousins is slowly becoming the team's #2 guy, pulling down 8 rebounds and shooting another 80% game, going 4-5.
  • James Harden, fresh out of Oklahoma, contributed well, shooting 4-10 and rebounding 6 times! When you can get the SG grabbing rebounds, you're in a good place.
  • Jameer Nelson was lights out from beyond the arc, draining 2-2 and 3-5 overall. He also got 7 assists. He's been a great addition to the team.
  • Just when you thought Jason Thompson would be outshadowed on the starting roster, he snagged 12 rebounds and shot 3-7. Great job from the big man at power forward.
  • Samuel Dalembert was phenominal on defense, grabbing 2 steals and 3 blocks! Perfect shooting too, 2-2
  • Eugene Jeter still producing, 2-7 with 4 points and 2 assists. Not bad for the young PG off the bench.

Post-Game Interviews

Alex Best (King's Head Coach): "This was the kind of game I saw the King's playing even before I joined the staff. All of the starters were working well together, and we just got a lot of great looks both on offense and defense. Expect more wins just like this in the future."

DeMarcus Cousins (Player Of The Game): "This was a fantastic game. It feels really good to finally get a win under our belt. It was a close one, but we managed to hold out and win. Just a lot of fun out there."

Tyreke Evans (Role Player): "They played a little dirty once they saw they were losing. I mean, my contact with Lawson near the end of the game was no accident. It's just sad when a team does that."

Jon Ratski's Review
It must feel great to finally get a win under their belt. The Nuggets stuck with the Kings for most of the game, actually shooting better then they did. Down by 3 with 20 seconds to go in the fourth, the Kings gave the ball to their new PG Jameer Nelson and he made a clutch three point shot to tie and send it into overtime. Then, in overtime, it was all Cousins and Evans, managing to sneak out the win. Let's see what was good and bad about this game.
  • A win's a win, even if it's only by one point.
  • The Nuggets made 2 more shots than the Kings did, shooting 49% to the King's 47%.
  • The slight foul advantage lead to the win, Kings going 10/14 on the line to the Nugget's 8/10
  • Nuggets managed to out-block the best blocking team in the league, 6 to 1
  • Kings finally got it going in the paint, scoring 44 down low.
  • Tyreke Evans came close to a Player of the Game performance, shooting 60% on the field with 8-9 at the free throw line, landing 21 points.
  • Cousins could not be stopped, going 10-13 and snagging 6 rebounds.
  • Although his shooting was rough, Nelson hit three's when it counted, going 4-18 on the floor and 3-8 beyond the arc.
  • Thompson and Garcia still hiding in the shadows, both only scoring 4 points with less than 4 shots each.
  • Dalembert had a great day off the bench, shotting 3-4 and adding 6 points to the total.
  • When two players manage to score over half your teams points, you'll win. Nice play from Evans and Cousins.

Sacramento Kings head coach Paul Westphal has been fired!

A press release was made earlier today, congratulating young coach Alexander Best on his new position as head coach of the Sacramento Kings. The team, going 0-4 to start the season, is showing desperation for improvement by hiring this promising new coach.

Alex Best (King's Head Coach): "I'm excited to get started with the Kings. We have a long road ahead of us, but I believe we can make the necessary changes in order to improve and start winning games. That's my biggest goal with this club, to simply win games. I'm looking forward to this season."

DeMarcus Cosuins, Kings Center: "I'm looking forward to not losing games anymore. I think Alex is a step in the right direction for us, but only time will tell if it's a good move. But hey, at least it's a move in the right direction."

Post-Game Interviews

Paul Westphal: "We got carried away being so close for so long. We ended up trying to take highlight-reel shots and we missed them. Tyreke's missed layup at the end of the game really put this out of reach for us. We'll just need to hit the practice court harder this Thursday to come back from this."

Jose Calderon (Player of the Game): "It feels really good to finally get a win. This was a hard fought game and simply came down to bench production. DeRozan was awesome off the bench, and he really lifted us up."

Tyreke Evans (King's Player of the Game): I don't think either team played well today. We were both hitting our heads against the wall. I guess they were just hitting their heads better."

Jon Ratski's Review

This game showed more promise than the past three for the Kings, and really came down to the fourth quater. Kings couldn't rally at the end, and Raptors barely held out for the win. If the Kings can keep this sort of intensity, we may see a few wins yet. So let's look at the good and bad from this past game.
  • Evans was right. They Raptors beat their heads better. Bargnani shot 7-17 yet still got 16 points. Terrible outing for the Raptors.
  • Tyreke played hard, scoring the game high 22 with 9-15 shooting and 7 rebounds.
  • Cousins was very consistant all game and was a relable force downlow that the Raptors couldn't stop. 7-8 with 15 points and even a block.
  • Jason Thompson was experementing this game, taking a few shots from down low and mid-range, going 3-7 with 6 points.
  • Garcia has been falling into the dark over the past few games. After a great start to the season, only shot 3-8 and 6 points.
  • Thonrton got the start at PG again, going 2-6 and 0-2 from beyond the arc. This self-proclaimed "parimater shooter" should probably stick to the basic shots.
  • Raptors managed to get on the break a lot, 16 points form the break compared to 0 from the Kings.
  • Both teams shot 49%
  • Kings continue to show dominance in blocking, picking up 6 this game compared to the Raptor's 3.

Raptors are now 1-2
Kings are now 0-4

What's Next For The Kings?

There are a bunch of issues facing the Kings that need to be resolved. Here, I'll break down exactly what needs to happen next if the Kings hope to turn the tables and start this season off right.
  • A coaching switch may be needed. Dropping this badly at the beginning of the season isn't a good sign. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw some changes behind the scenes.
  • You need Tyreke Evans to be on all cylandars every game. Whether Westphal will admit it or not, he's their star player. You need him performing.
  • Get a three-point shooter! Out of the 30 teams in the NBA, Kings are ranked 21st in 3PT shooting, shooting only .303
  • They need to work on defense. Nearly half the points they give up are on the fast break or in the paint.
  • They need to stop the other team from scoring somehow. There are only three teams that have gave up more points per game than the Kings have.
  • Figure out the PG spot. We've seen someone different start there every game. None of them can drain the three.

Expect to see some of these things adressed in games to come. So here's what's going right for the Kings so far.
  • Kings have a 5-game home stand coming up.
  • They are getting really good production off the bench from Casspi and Jeter.
  • They are passing the ball well, being the third best assisting team in the league.
  • Keep their big man doing what they are doing. They are tied for the most blocks per games with the Spurs.
  • They have size down-low, they just need to use it.

Post-Game Interview

Paul Westphal: "This is not only our 3rd game lost in a row, but the second in a row with a 20+ point loss. I'm not going to say anything specific yet, but things are going to change. We don't have a single player who can shoot the 3, and we can stop the fast break. I don't see us winning a single game at this rate."

Kevin Martin (Player of the Game): "I guess they shouldn't have traded me after all."

Marcus Thornton (King's Player of the Game): "We couldn't stop anyone. We tried to implement our plays on defense, and none of them worked. It was a hard game, and practice for the rest of the week is going to be hard. I'm confident that we'll come back from this."

Jon Ratski's Review
Kings drop 3 straight with a big loss against the Rockets

Things are not looking good for the Kings. It wasn't the referee's fault, it wasn't the other team making great shots. It was Kings. All Kings. There is no one to blame for this loss but the coach and players themselves. They are making every team look like a championship team at the moment. So let's break down this game and see just where things went wrong.
  • Rockets outscored the Kings in the paint 44 to 24
  • Kings couldn't even stop the Bench, letting them score 30 points
  • Rockets shot 57% where the Kings only shot 39%. Nothing was dropping
  • All 5 of the Rockets starters got to the foul line and were successful, shooting 77% on the line where the Kings only shot 42%
  • Marcus Thorton, the Kings top scorer, still only shot 55%. |8-15, 2 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl|
  • Tyreke Evans shot 6-10 from the field, 2-2 from beyond the arc, and was the only well performing player for the Kings
  • Eugene Jeter still producing fairly well, 3-7 on the field with 2 assists.
  • Demarcus Cousins tried to pull his team up with 8 points in a row, yet only 3-8
  • Dalembert kept beating his head against the wall with a 1-6 performance.
  • It was "Beat on Kings" day, since all but one player on the Rockets scored at least 2 points,
  • Yao Ming blocked 5 shots, and was unstoppable down low.

As we suspected, Paul Westphal has already submitted a new starting roster. Due to the game that Jeter had last game, he made a few switches to place him into the 2nd line spot.

Post-Game Interviews

Paul Westphal: "This game came down to the fact that they were a better team. We made stupid fouls, and played no defense. Ginobli was unstoppable and made impossible shots. You just can't win with that type of gameplay."

Manu Ginobli (Player of the Game): "I always enjoy games like these. Everything was clicking. I just couldn't miss, and the coach saw that. So they kept giving me the ball and I kept making it."

Tyreke Evans (King's Player of the Game): "Wanna see a game where the referees were playing against you harder than the other team, and every shot we attempted just didn't fall? Re-watch this game. Ridiculous."

Jon Ratski's Review
What just happened? Kings fall to Spurs with a 22 point gap.

Nothing the Kings threw out was working. In fact, the Kings didn't lead once in this game, and I don't even know where to begin. Sure, the referees were rough on the Kings. I mean, Jeter gets batted in the back of the head by Parker, and no call? Regardless of the referees, you just can't win when Ginobli is putting up 30 points, and shooting at 72%. It didn't matter how many people were on him. Ginobli is the kind of player who will make a shot even if you slap him in the face as he goes up.

So let's break down this game!
  • The Kings only made 28 of there 65 shots. That performance is just begging for a loss.
  • The Spurs out-rebounded the Kings 30 to 20.
  • No one could stop the Spurs down-low. 52 of their 85 came from the pain, where only 24 of the Kings 63 was down low.
  • Spurs fast break points blew away the Kings 19 to 2.
  • Eugene Jeter must have gotten a big head. He only shot 5-15.
  • Tyreke Evans did all he could to carry this team. 3-4 from down town and 8-16 from the field, with a block and 3 steals.
  • Demarcus Cousins came to play, 5-7 from the field.
  • Only three of the Kings players scored 10+ points, where 3 of the Spurs scored 10+ with Ginoblis 30+ game.
  • Richard Jefferson shot 100%, 6-6 FG, 3-3 3PT.
  • Spurs outscored the Kings in every quater, except for the 3rd.

Post-Game Interviews

Paul Westphal: "I don't really want to talk about this game. We had 11 turnovers. Assuming we could've scored every time down we turned over, the final score would have been 90 - 77. We could have easily won if we would have just held on to the basketball. But hey, that's what practice is for."

Jason Kidd (Player of the Game): "This was a really fun game, you know? We were working on all cylinders, and it's hard to lose when we play like that. They gave us a little scare near the end, but we managed to hold out."

Eugene Jeter (King's Player of the Game): "I mean, it would've been nice to win this game. I feel like I performed exactly how the coach wanted me to for my first game int he NBA. We just didn't do enough things right to win. But man, even when we were down 20 points in the third, coach Westphal just kept telling us to get out there and work at it one basket at a time. That gave me the motivation to carry the 4th quater."

Jon Ratski's Review
"Butler slaps Kings with 22 points and a Maverick win."
These guys were down 20 at one point in the third quater, and it looked like this game was all Mavericks all game long. To be fair, look at the stat sheet! There's no way you can win a game with that many differences. Kings could not stop the Mavericks top four players, Caron Butler (22 points), Jason Terry (16 points), Jason Kidd (12 points, 14 assists), and Dirk Nowitzki (11 points). I'm sorry, but when Jason Kidd is throwing around 14 assists and pounding out a double double, you can't win. The kings needed to keep a hand in his face, and unfortunately Udrih could not do that. The Mavericks showed off what a playoff contending team can do. If most of the season is like this, than the Kings are in for a long journey.

Noticeable Stat Differences

Kings - 14 |Assists| 23 - Mavericks
Kings - 11 |Turnovers| 3 - Mavericks
Kings - 3 |Steals| 10 - Mavericks
Kings - 8 |Blocks| 3 - Mavericks

Tyreke Evans
What a disappointing start from the Kings "Star" player. He missed EVERY three point attempt he made (0-3) and only managed to shoot 43% from the field. In the second half, it looked like he missed every time he got the ball. We knew that Evans wasn't a strong mid-long range shooter, but that's where 70% of Kings shots were. He needs to improve in that area.
| 16 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 6-14, 43% |

Francisco Garcia
I would like to crown this guy the first half king. When the Kings were still in this game, Garcia was leading the way. While Evans missed shots, Garcia was making them. I see a lot of playing time in this man's future.
| 16 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 blocks |

Eugene Jeter
Who is this man? He was UNDRAFTED this past year, and it's now his rookie season. Yet he put up the number he did, shooting a fantastic 88% from the field, missing a contested jumper in the end of the fourth! I mean Jeter took CHARGE in the 4th quater and managed to bring the Kings within 8 points! It'll be interesting to see what happens now that this kid has proven he can score.

Most surprising successful line-up from the Kings
PG: Eugen Jeter
SG: Tyreke Evans
SF: Omri Casspi
PF: Jason Thompson
C: Demarcus Cousins

And they kept this lineup the ENTIRE 4th quater. And why not? They almost pulled this game back within reach. Why would you sub out any player when this lineup was on a role?

We'll see if any changes come next game. The potential is there, but the execution isn't.

The Roster
Confirmed Situationals
1st Line (Starters)
PG: Beno Udrih
SG: Tyreke Evans
SF: Francisco Garcia
PF: Jason Thompson
C: Demarcus Cousins
Paul Westphal: "This starting roster emphasizes a new direction for Sacramento. I do not believe in "Star Players". I want a team of 5 out their winning games. To start, the position of starting PG is still up in the air. We've decided to start Udrih right now due to his experience in the league and his ability to shoot close and medium range shots, a focal point of our offense. SG will go to Tyreke Evans, since his size is perfect for that position despite his comfort in the PG position. Small Forward will be Garcia. We hope this year will prove to be a break out year for him. Jason Thompson and Cousins will round out of big man front."

2nd Line (Bench)
PG: Marcus Thornton
SG: Marquis Daniels
SF: Omri Casspi
PF: Donte Greene
C: Samuel Dalembert
Paul Westphal: "I honestly believe the success of our season will come down to how well these 5 play together. The sixth man emphasis will either come from the SG or SF spot, depending on our opponent. Casspi will be considered our general 6th man, however Daniels will also be seeing a lot of play time as well, even next to Evans at times. Greene and Dalembert will be rounding out the big front, typically subbing in at the same time."

3rd Line (Development)
PG: Eugene Jeter
SG: Jermaine Taylor
SF: Tyreke Evans
PF: Omri Casspi
C: Demarcus Cousins
Paul Westphal: "This line is a very short-term line. This group will get at least a few minutes every game to give our new players a chance to get on the floor every game. Our prospective rookie, Eugene Jeter, will hopefully prove to be a successful point guard in our franchise. Jermaine Taylor will be a SG, which moves Tyreke Evans to a SF spot to keep at least one starter on the court. I've moved Omri Casspi to PF since his size can match up well, and rounded up the center with Demarcus Cousins."

Keys to Success
Paul Westphal: "I'm very excited for this season. I believe that, if Evans can improve from Medium and Long-Range, we can win a lot of games. Our front court needs some work too. I will expel some rumors now, I am looking at the trade market and rumor mills as we speak. There are no details as to specifics, but we will be looking to move our rosters around."
